July 3, 2021: As of June 30 we had 9 dogs in heartworm treatment ( Foxy, Apollo, Finn, Sadie, Charlene, Suzanne, Bernice, Leo, Barney)and Roger in vetting. We pulled 6 dogs from Allendale (Charlene, Suzanne, Bernice, Leo, Barney, Roger) 3 dogs were transported to our northern partner rescue (Thelma, Louise, Gracie) We have 2 dogs adoption ready (Grace, Hercules, ) Holly was adopted! Adoption events and home visits have been canceled until further notice due to coronavirus. Everyone stay safe so we can get 'back to business as usual' ! THE HEARTBEAT GOES ON We have saved 1265 dogs, including 828 HW+ dogs from area shelters since we started this program in August 2013 (21 since January 2021) PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us. Funds raised through the HeartBeat program (and FONAA ) are disbursed directly to the veterinarians, kennels and transporters who help us save these dogs. Our goal is to provide our partner rescues and adopters with healthy adoptable dogs. We address ALL issues a dog may have, including behavior-temperament as well as medical.
The Heart Beat Goes on program is designed to work with area shelters to raise funds for dogs to safely put them through treatment. We do NOT do so called 'slow kill treatment' (which is nothing more than doxy and regular heartworm preventive, which does NOT kill adult worms, they still have to 'die of old age'. ) All our HeartBeat dogs receive 'fast kill' treatment so they are completely rid of the disease in 2-3 months. Heart worm disease does not have to be a shelter dog's DEATH sentence. It is treatable. Every dog YOU help us save , helps us not only treat that dog but educate area shelters. Your help dispels the myths associated with these unfortunate diagnosed dogs. PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us. North Augusta animals lives matter: Stop unnecessary euthanasia LOCAL ADOPTION PROGRAM In February, 2 SAA dogs found their forever homes, Kirsten from Allendale and long term resident Tasha
ADOPTED 2-28-21. Kirsten is a young happy girl, she loves to play with toys. Not cat friendly. Dog friendly but selective. She showed up at a house in the middle of nowhere and was taken to the Allendale shelter. SAA then took her and completed her HW treatment and she found her forever home 2-28-21. She will be companion to a long distance trucker! Happy trails Kirsten!
ADOPTED 2-27-21: Tasha was one of our Heartbeat alums from 2016, her first adopter returned her when her job changed. Her second home was perfect for her, a mom and 13 yr old boy and no other animals, unfortunately the boy then went to live with his dad and Tasha was left behind and mom returned her to us .. with a tumor on one leg. The tumor was removed and Tasha tried to find a forever home for quite some time and 2-27-21 was adopted by her original foster! We pulled 7 dogs from Allendale (Kirsten, Grace, Mike, Hercules2, Hansel, Gretel, Opal) We have 2 dogs adoption ready (Tasha, Sam,) Hercules will be ready soon. 5 dogs were transported to our northern partner rescue (Sonic, Xena, Hansel, Gretel, Opal) Long term resident Judy has crossed the bridge and Holly is still looking for a hospice foster as she cannot continue treatment. Seymour, Mike, Titan, and Gracie have been adopted! Adoption events and home visits have been canceled until further notice due to coronavirus. December 1, 2020: As of November 30 we had 3 dogs in heartworm treatment (Seymour, Sonic, Zena . We pulled 2 dogs from an Aiken rescue Hercules and Zena We have 5 dogs adoption ready ( Tasha, Gracie, Sam, Titan, Mike ) 3 dogs were transported to our northern partner rescue (Remi, Eliza, China, Hercules) and 1 to partner rescue in KY (Calian ) We still have permanent resident Judy and Holly is still looking for a hospice foster as she cannot continue treatment. Ricky and Talon have been adopted! Adoption events and home visits have been canceled until further notice due to coronavirus. Everyone stay safe so we can get 'back to business as usual' !!!
THE HEARTBEAT GOES ON We have saved 1237 dogs, including 813 HW+ dogs from area shelters since we started this program in August 2013 ( 18 positive and 36 negative since Jan.1 2020) PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us. Funds raised through the HeartBeat program (and FONAA ) are disbursed directly to the veterinarians, kennels and transporters who help us save these dogs. Our goal is to provide our partner rescues and adopters with healthy adoptable dogs. We address ALL issues a dog may have, including behavior-temperament as well as medical.
The Heart Beat Goes on program is designed to work with area shelters to raise funds for dogs to safely put them through treatment. We do NOT do so called 'slow kill treatment' (which is nothing more than doxy and regular heartworm preventive, which does NOT kill adult worms, they still have to 'die of old age'. ) All our HeartBeat dogs receive 'fast kill' treatment so they are completely rid of the disease in 2-3 months. Heart worm disease does not have to be a shelter dog's DEATH sentence. It is treatable. Every dog YOU help us save , helps us not only treat that dog but educate area shelters. Your help dispels the myths associated with these unfortunate diagnosed dogs.

In June we were informed that RADAR is closing its virtual doors. Freddy was the last of our dogs RADAR helped with treatment funding. NEWS MARCH 2020 -- Friday April 3rd, 2020
April 3, 2020: As of March 31 we had 6 dogs in heartworm treatment ( Gage, Laura, Sandy, Larry, Libby, Scully) . We pulled 2 dogs from Aiken ( Lotus, Scully) in March. We have 5 dogs adoption ready Blade, Tasha, Blue, Ollie, Ellie ) We still have permanent resident Judy and Holly is now looking for a hospice foster as she cannot continue treatment. Adoption events, home visits and transports were canceled for the month of March due to coronavirus pandemic. Everyone stay safe so we can get 'back to business as usual' !!!
THE HEARTBEAT GOES ON
We have saved 1196 dogs, including 804 HW+ dogs from area shelters since we started this program in August 2013 ( 9 positive and 5 negative since Jan.1 2020) PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us.

The Heart Beat Goes on program is designed to work with area shelters to raise funds for dogs to safely put them through treatment. We do NOT do so called 'slow kill treatment' (which is nothing more than doxy and regular heartworm preventive, which does NOT kill adult worms, they still have to 'die of old age'. ) All our HeartBeat dogs receive 'fast kill' treatment so they are completely rid of the disease in 2-3 months. Heart worm disease does not have to be a shelter dog's DEATH sentence. It is treatable. Every dog YOU help us save , helps us not only treat that dog but educate area shelters. Your help dispels the myths associated with these unfortunate diagnosed dogs.
We can not do this without the help of our donors and sponsors, as well as our faithful 'keyboard rescuers' who help network these dogs. It takes a village, and we thank all who help, each month, from the bottom of our hearts.

Our goal is to provide our partner rescues and adopters with healthy adoptable dogs. We address ALL issues a dog may have, including behavior-temperament as well as medical.

January 1, 2020: As of December 31 we had 2 dogs in heartworm treatment (Princess, Holly,(NA) and 2 finishing initial vetting ( Buddy, Astro (NA). Cherry finished heartworm treatment and is adoption ready, Thunder [NA) finished heartworm treatment and went to our partner rescue DSR, as did Pippin and Oliver Twist [NA] We pulled 2 dogs from North Augusta (Astro and Buddy) We have 7 dogs adoption ready Blade, Bella, Tasha, Blue, Ollie, Cherry and Sammy. We had adoption event at Pet Smart December 4. HAPPY NEW YEAR We would like to wish a very Happy New Year to all our volunteers, fosters, adopters, transporters, donors, partner rescues, veterinarians and organizations who have helped us throughout 2019! Hi, I'm Tasha. Last Christmas, I was in what I thought was my forever home. I had had a rough life, I was kept outside and my owners didn't care much about me, so I got heartworms ...my rescue got me from Aiken County shelter and treated my heartworms, then I had a back problem from the treatment but that finally got well, and I was adopted, but that lady had to return me when her job changed. I came back to my rescue and had a really nice foster and then was adopted again by a lady and her son, and I was SO happy, I had a warm bed and lots of toys and no other dogs or cats to bother me. The lady's son was my best buddy , I slept with him and he played with me every day. I love to dress up and wear sweaters and fluffy collars. I had a great Christmas last year... but then my best buddy went back to live with his father, and my mom decided she didn't want me any more so I came back to my rescue. Everyone is nice to me here, but there are a lot of other dogs and I don't much like other dogs and it's nothing like being in a real home, I know cause I've had 2 of them. I am older now,about 6, and no one seems to want me. I also have to be the 'only dog', my rescue can't even take me to adoption events because I get too upset around strange dogs, so no one ever gets to see how pretty I am unless they put in what's called an application and come to see me. I love people, and children, I am nice and quiet, I'm what's called an 'inside dog' (I get allergies outside). Is there any hope for me, can I have a 3rd chance? I know some dogs don't even get a 2d chance, but, Is there ANY chance I can have a new home for THIS Christmas? December 3, 2019: As of November 30 we had 3 dogs in heartworm treatment (Princess, Holly, Cherry(NA) and 2 finishing initial vetting (Sammy, Oliver Twist (NA). Jason, Joy and Heath [AK] finished their heartworm treatment and went to our partner rescue DSR, as did Coby, Duke (AK) and Caroline (NA) We pulled 3 dogs from another local rescue which is closing (Blue, Ollie and Cherry) and 5 dogs from North Augusta (Princess, Holly, Lady, Sammy, Oliver Twist, Princess (NA) We have 5 dogs adoption ready Blade, Bella, Tasha, Blue and Ollie. We had adoption events at Pet Smart November 8-9-10 and Nov.30. We adopted 3 dogs (Hawk )(Chewy and Lady (NA) and Rizzo (AK)

We have saved 1180 dogs, including 799 HW+ dogs from area shelters since we started this program in August 2013 (40 positive and 29 negative since Jan.1 2019) PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us.
Thanks to Raising Aid for Dogs at Risk (RADAR) for help with funding for Princess and Holly this month. Funds raised through the HeartBeat program (and FONAA and RADAR) are disbursed directly to the veterinarians, kennels and transporters who help us save these dogs. Our goal is to provide our partner rescues and adopters with healthy adoptable dogs. We address ALL issues a dog may have, including behavior-temperament as well as medical.
The Heart Beat Goes on program is designed to work with area shelters to raise funds for dogs to safely put them through treatment. We do NOT do so called 'slow kill treatment' (which is nothing more than doxy and regular heartworm preventive, which does NOT kill adult worms, they still have to 'die of old age'. ) All our HeartBeat dogs receive 'fast kill' treatment so they are completely rid of the disease in 2-3 months. Heart worm disease does not have to be a shelter dog's DEATH sentence. It is treatable. Every dog YOU help us save , helps us not only treat that dog but educate area shelters. Your help dispels the myths associated with these unfortunate diagnosed dogs.
We can not do this without the help of our donors and sponsors, as well as our faithful 'keyboard rescuers' who help network these dogs. It takes a village, and we thank all who help, each month, from the bottom of our hearts.

We pulled 5 dogs from North Augusta in November (Holly, Lady, Sammy, Oliver Twist, Princess). North Augusta does no vetting of animals and costs locally to vet and spay-neuter a healthy animal range from $ 200-300. Friends of North Augusta Animals (FONAA) for help with initial vetting on all 5 dogs. As Holly and Princess are HW positive, they are being treated through our Heartbeat Program.
We also pulled 3 dogs from The Ark, a North Augusta rescue which is closing. (Cherry, Ollie, Blue) They are all ready for adoption.
We are circulating a petition to North Augusta City Officials to send the animals to Aiken County (which operates a top notch shelter) until such time as North Augusta can operate a humane and decent shelter and animal control or AT LEAST help with the vetting of the North Augusta dogs. LOCAL ADOPTION PROGRAM
In November, we adopted out Chewy, Rizzo and Lady! Chewy was heartworm positive in North Augusta, Rizzo heartworm positive in Aiken, both were treated through our Heartbeat program. Lady was negative from North Augusta. All 3 have found great forever homes!

HOME VISITS
Shelter Animals Advocates volunteers do home visits on all dogs adopted through our program within 2-3 weeks after adoption, to see how 'our dog' is fitting in to its new home and provide any assistance or resources the adopter may need. We are always available to our adopters by phone or email to discuss any concerns or issues that may arise (or share in happy news!) November 2, 2019: As October 31 we had 5 dogs in heartworm treatment (Joy, Heath, Jason(AK) Chewy,Thunder (NA). Hawk completed HW treatment and was adopted and Ruby and Caspian completed treatment and went to DSR. We have 3 dogs in preparation for transport (Coby, Duke, [AK] Caroline [NA]) We have 4 dogs adoption ready Rizzo, Blade, Bella, Tasha. We had adoption events at Pet Smart October 5 and 26 and adopted 1 dog (Hawk ) We pulled 7 dogs Jason, Joy, Heath, Coby, Duke [AK] Caroline, Thunder [NA]. Judy was returned and is now a permanent resident

Tasha was one of our Heartbeat alums, her first adopter returned her when her job changed. Her second home was perfect for her, a mom and 13 yr old boy and no other animals, unfortunately the boy then went to live with his dad and Tasha was left behind and mom returned her to us .. with a tumor on one leg. The tumor has been removed (non malignant) and Tasha is ready to try again ...Will the 3rd time be her charm? She is a snuggle bunny with low-medium energy. Tasha is sweet and friendly and loves people. She should NOT be around cats or other dogs. Tasha also has allergy issues (to grass) and needs to be an inside dog. Tasha's adoption fee is $150 (which includes all vetting plus 1 month heartworm prevention and flea tick prevention and a bag of the food she is currently on. Tasha is an approximately 5 1/2 year old American Pitbull Terrier/Boxer mix that weighs about 50 lbs. She is potty trained, kennel/crate trained, is GREAT with people.
Tasha is now featured on the Bark Mart billboard (across from Sam's) in the hopes her forever adopter will see her and give us a call! Please help us find Tasha a home!

We pulled 1 dog from North Augusta in July (Bella) Thanks to Friends of North Augusta Animals (FONAA) for covering spay-neuter costs. North Augusta does no vetting of animals and costs locally to vet and spay-neuter a healthy animal range from $200-300. We are now circulating a petition to North Augusta City Officials to send the animals to Aiken County (which operates a top notch shelter) until such time as North Augusta can operate a humane and decent shelter and animal control. HOME VISITS
Shelter Animals Advocates volunteers do home visits on all dogs adopted through our program within 2-3 weeks after adoption, to see how 'our dog' is fitting in to its new home and provide any assistance or resources the adopter may need. We are always available to our adopters by phone or email to discuss any concerns or issues that may arise (or share in happy news!) Here are some of the home visits we did in June and July.

JUNE 2019 NEWS -- Tuesday July 2nd, 2019
July 2, 2019: As June 30 we had 5 dogs in heartworm treatment (Barclay, Russo, Lara, Peter [AK] Rosie [NA]) Tasha is readying for surgery, Abriana possible surgery, and 3 adoption ready ( Mary, Blade, Butch ). 5 dogs completed heartworm treatment and transported to DSR (Maverick, Brady, Lindy, Tremont [AK] Lola [NA]). We had adoption events at Pet Smart June 8 and 22. We adopted 7 dogs (Cinammon, Smokey [NA] Glory, Cynthia, Roy, Natalie and Shiloh [AK])) We pulled 9 dogs ( Blade, Rosie, Butch [NA] Russo, Peter, Lara, Natalie, Shiloh, Abriana [AK]). Mary was returned (after 9 months) and is ready for adoption.
THE HEARTBEAT GOES ON
We have saved 1158 dogs, including 787 HW+ dogs from area shelters since we started this program in August 2013 (27 positive and 20 negative since Jan.1 2019) PLEASE help us continue this lifesaving mission, these dogs have NO ONE but us.
Funds raised through the HeartBeat program (and FONAA and RADAR) are disbursed directly to the veterinarians, kennels and transporters who help us save these dogs. Our goal is to provide our partner rescues and adopters with healthy adoptable dogs. We address ALL issues a dog may have, including behavior-temperament as well as medical.
The Heart Beat Goes on program is designed to work with area shelters to raise funds for dogs to safely put them through treatment. We do NOT do so called 'slow kill treatment' (which is nothing more than doxy and regular heartworm preventive, which does NOT kill adult worms, they still have to 'die of old age'. ) All our HeartBeat dogs receive 'fast kill' treatment so they are completely rid of the disease in 2-3 months. Heart worm disease does not have to be a shelter dog's DEATH sentence. It is treatable. Every dog YOU help us save , helps us not only treat that dog but educate area shelters. Your help dispels the myths associated with these unfortunate diagnosed dogs.

June 2, 2019: As May 31 we had 7 dogs in heartworm treatment (Cynthia, Brady, Lindy, Maverick, Barclay, Tremont [Aiken] Lola [NA]) , and 4 adoption ready (Roy, Glory, Cinnamon, Smokey ). We had adoption events at Pet Smart May 17,18,19. We adopted 3 dogs (Lucian, Mara, Kory) We pulled 5 dogs ( Barclay, Tremont, Glory, Roy (Aiken) and Smokey (NA). Tasha was returned (after a year) and has health issues we are treating. Sadly, Panzer is deceased (see obituary below) .

ANGEL PANZER Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Panzer in May. Panzer had come to us in June 2018 . He was a owner surrender from a local Aiken county shelter that is located in North Augusta many don’t know exists. His owners turned in 5 animals 2 dogs and 3 cats saying they had scabies. We quickly needed to access this situation so we stepped up to have the animals skin scraped as we only had 72hrs to place animals from this shelter or they were euthanized. Of the two dogs one looked wonderful and the other looked hideous. The hideous ones name was Panzer and he looked/smelled awful. Double ear infections, his skin was sloughing off. The AC officer was very leery of him because the owners was claiming scabies and he looked every bit like he had something creepy crawling on him. We had no idea of what kind of personality he had nothing to work from. Mary Lou and I held our breath got him to the vet and had a skin scraping done. He was negative. Ear and skin infection was the diagnosis.. Although he reeked and was obviously uncomfortable he was a wonderfully nice, calm boy. We had hope.. looking at him we knew it would be a long road to 100%. We dedicated ourselves to daily then weekly baths. We paid strict attention to his diet he started to look better however the ear infection would not leave. It was constant. So a few month later we decided to do an allergy test on him. Our vet was just like us determined to ‘put clothes on him’ well his test came back he was highly allergic to Dust mites,beef,chicken and fish. So we cleaned his kennel/bedding/ daily kept on with bath and found a limited ingredient diet that had no allergy trigger. During all this time we loved this dog. He was so well mannered, potty trained, smiling and happy all the time. As time went on his skin started to heal, he loved baths and everyone. In April 2019 we had hopes we may be able to put him up for adoption in a few months. He was really looking good. Then he developed lameness in his rear legs, first one then the other then 'magically' it cleared up with no residual effects. Then Saturday May 11 out of the blue...Panzer threw up. He’s never thrown up. Sunday Panzer was licking air and couldn't shut his mouth. So Monday morning we sent him first thing to the vet. All day observation three vets looking at him, numerous tests, Panzer was declining and could not now lower his head. He was kept under observation at the vets on steroids and fluids.. but he could not swallow. The diagnosis was Brain Tumor. We had to let this wonderful dog who became a project for us go. We were committed to give him all the time he needed to get him a good home he deserves. A Brain tumor we could not fix. It was not easy to let him go but we are committed to doing the right thing for our dogs, no matter how painful for us. Panzer crossed the bridge. He is no longer in pain and suffering. Until we meet again. Panzer when he first came to us in June 2018 ...
